I remember drawing simple portraits of women’s faces when I was in grade 6 primary school. I loved it but my sister was seen as the artist in my family. She was excellent at art, and so my journey into my own art lay dormant until I was 55 years old and going through a difficult time in my life.
I decided to cheer myself up by enrolling in drawing classes and was lucky that the wonderful Julie Hutchinson was running classes at that time. I attempted my first portrait at the age of 58.
From there I developed a love of pastels and went on to draw many portraits over the next nine years.
I retired from my psychology practice last year and now only work one day a week. Now I have more time to do art and I’ve enrolled in an online course on painting portraits in oil and acrylics.
Wow! I’ve started a whole new chapter. It’s never too late to grow. Now I want to be part of the art community. I dare say I can even say I’m an artist. Amateur Artist sits comfortably with me. I hope to exhibit in members exhibitions. I’m looking forward to feeling a part of the artistic community in my local area. I’m looking forward to learning so much more about artistic expression.
