Taja Steinbeck

I have always loved sewing, being creative and experimenting with fabrics and patterns. I began sewing at five years of age and continued to follow my passion as I grew older by undertaking an apprenticeship as a dressmaker. After my apprenticeship, my life took me on lots of other adventures and I didn’t do much sewing for about 25 years. 7 years ago I made my first quilt and fell in love with sewing all over again. From there I began improvising with fabrics, colours and learning new techniques.

I love trying to use up every last scrap of fabric, with a goal to make as little waste as possible. I source most of my fabric from opshops, garage sales and other sewers that have small pieces of leftover fabric that I love finding creative ways to utilise. I enjoy the challenge of piecing together small scraps to make a beautiful and artful quilted creation. I love colour and patterns and constantly learning new techniques and trying new things. I always have lots of projects on the go which keeps me busy and happy.

Last year two of my wall hangings were  part of the Sydney Quilt Show and I participated in the Black and White challenge by Quilting NSW. I am currently working on my contributions to the Incognito Art Show which takes place later in the year.
